About Us

Rumney Pottery has been part of the Rumney community for nearly 200 years, though pottery on this site is said to date back to Roman times. Nestled along Newport Road, the pottery’s riverside location provided clay, transport, and coal—making it the perfect place for a thriving craft. From the 1830s, Rumney Pottery was a bustling communal workshop, producing everyday essentials like plant pots, bowls, and basins that supported households and industries across South Wales during the Industrial Revolution. Over the years, the pottery evolved—surviving wars, industrial decline, and the rise of mass production. In the 1950s, Robert and Patricia Giles shifted the focus to commemorative and decorative pieces, blending traditional craftsmanship with artistic design. Their vision gave Rumney Pottery its distinctive identity, a legacy that continues today. Now run by the 8th generation, Martyn Giles, Rumney Pottery creates handcrafted commemorative works renowned for their royal blue finish and personal touch. Each piece carries with it centuries of tradition, family heritage, and the unique mark of its maker. From local families to customers around the world, our pottery continues to connect people through craft, history, and story.
